Intent

At St Margaret’s at Troy Town, we believe that every child is wonderfully made and uniquely gifted. Through our PE curriculum, we nurture both physical development and personal character, empowering children to grow in confidence, health, and resilience.

We want all pupils to enjoy being active, value teamwork, and strive for their personal best; both on and off the field.

Rooted in our Christian vision “Let your light shine” (Matthew 5:16), we celebrate each child’s potential to flourish through movement, challenge and inclusive physical activity.

Our curriculum is designed to:

  • Inspire a lifelong love of movement and sport

  • Promote physical and emotional well-being

  • Develop perseverance, cooperation and respect

  • Celebrate effort, teamwork and personal growth as much as achievement

Implement

We follow the National Curriculum for PE and deliver two high-quality lessons each week, led by class teachers and enhanced by specialist sports coaches. Our curriculum is planned in collaboration with Greenacre Sports Partnership, and includes opportunities for progression, competition and leadership.

Pupils experience a broad and balanced range of physical activities, including:

  • Team games (football, netball, hockey)

  • Gymnastics and dance

  • Athletics and striking & fielding

  • Outdoor adventurous activities

  • Swimming in partnership with King’s School Rochester (Years 4–6)

Skills are progressively developed across year groups—from fundamental movement and spatial awareness in EYFS, to tactical understanding and leadership in Year 6. In every lesson, pupils are encouraged to collaborate, reflect and improve—building resilience, responsibility and confidence.

Supporting All Learners (including SEND)

Our curriculum is inclusive by design. Pupils with special educational needs or disabilities are supported through adapted equipment, visual modelling, structured guidance, and scaffolded tasks. This ensures every child can access, enjoy and succeed in PE, developing at their own pace with encouragement and support.

Enrichment & Community

We proudly develop leadership and teamwork through our Play Leaders and Sports Crew, who help organise and run lunchtime activities, fostering a sense of responsibility, inclusion and pupil voice.

Physical development and effort are celebrated across the school. Our annual Sports Day is a much-loved event. Pupils also take part in Mini Youth Games competitions and a wide range of inter-school tournaments, giving all children the opportunity to shine, grow, and compete with integrity.

Impact

The impact of our PE curriculum is seen not only in pupils’ physical development, but also in their confidence, teamwork, and resilience. We assess progress through a combination of questioning, observations during lessons, and the ongoing use of our ‘Pilgrim Progress’ records. These records use clear, progressive ‘I know...’ statements to track each child’s learning journey across different strands of PE.

Class teachers and specialist sports coaches work closely together to monitor pupil development. This ensures every child receives feedback tailored to their needs, and that learning builds effectively over time. The PE subject leader regularly reviews these assessments to ensure progression and consistency across year groups.

Assessment example:

As a result, by the end of each key stage, most pupils are working within or beyond age-related expectations in the sports and physical skills covered. More importantly, they leave St Margaret’s with the physical literacy, self-belief, and enjoyment of movement that enables them to lead active, healthy lives — now and into the future.

Pupil voice reflects this impact clearly:

“We all try our best and learn to be kind and fair even when we lose.” – Rayhaan Year 6

Participation in Medway Mini Youth Games

This academic year, our school proudly took part in the Medway Mini Youth Games series, competing in a wide range of sporting events against primary schools from across the local area. As a one-form entry school, we are especially proud to have finished in 17th place overall in the final series standings - an achievement that reflects the dedication, determination, and teamwork of our pupils.

Participation in the Mini Youth Games made a strong contribution to our pupils’ personal development and aligns closely with our school vision to “Let your light shine.” Pupils were encouraged to use their unique strengths, show perseverance and take pride in representing the school - whether through sporting success, effort, or commitment to fair play.

Participation in the Mini Youth Games has had a significant impact on our school community:

  • It provided pupils with the opportunity to represent their school in competitive, inclusive sports events, boosting self-esteem and pride.
  • Pupils developed key values such as sportsmanship, resilience, and collaboration, both on and off the field.
  • Engagement in the Games promoted wider participation in sport and increased enthusiasm for physical activity across the school.
  • We ensured that a broad range of pupils took part, including those who may not typically engage in competitive sport, supporting our commitment to inclusive PE.
  • By giving pupils the opportunity to participate in inclusive, competitive sports, we helped build resilience, confidence, leadership, and teamwork skills. These experiences extend learning beyond the classroom and contribute to well-rounded development.
  • Pupils demonstrated respect, determination, and good sportsmanship during competition, reflecting the high standards of behaviour and mutual respect we promote across the school.
  • Engagement in competitive sport enriched our broader curriculum offer and encouraged deeper participation in physical education, supporting health, wellbeing, and motivation across all ability groups.

Our school’s success - finishing 17th overall against much larger schools - highlights the impact of high-quality PE, inclusive opportunity, and the effective use of PE and Sports Premium funding to ensure every pupil is supported to flourish and, truly, let their light shine.

Swimming Success – 2024/25

Swimming forms a vital part of our PE curriculum, equipping pupils with essential life skills and water confidence. This year, our Year 6 pupils achieved excellent outcomes that reflect their hard work, resilience, and determination to improve.

As a one-form-entry school, we are proud to share the following swimming results for 2024–25:

  • 86.21% (25/29) of pupils can swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres

  • 86.21% (25/29) can use a range of strokes effectively, such as front crawl, backstroke, and breaststroke

  • 96.55% (28/29) are able to perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations

These outcomes show more than physical progress — they highlight the perseverance, independence and courage pupils develop in the water. Whether they start with confidence or anxiety, every child is supported to achieve their best.

Our PE curriculum not only nurtures skilled and active pupils, but also develops fair, compassionate, and resilient individuals, ready to thrive in sport and in life.
