“A different language is a different vision of life." Federico Fellini

At SMATT we believe that learning a foreign language provides an opening to other cultures and promotes international cooperation. High quality language learning fosters pupils’ curiosity and deepens their understanding of the wider world.

We are very fortunate to have a French specialist who gives short weekly lessons, based initially on interactive songs and games, to all year groups from R-6. Following the National Curriculum Programme of Study, pupils are provided with the tools to express their ideas and thoughts in French and to understand and respond to others, both in speech and, progressing through the school, in writing.

It is common for schools to introduce a foreign language from Year 3, so we are lucky that our pupils can begin their French journey in the Foundation Stage and have the continuity of a subject specialist fostering their learning throughout the school.
